- What Should I expect?
- Most people have difficulty making the first phone call. When they do, they will feel anxious. More than likely, your
first contact will be with an answering machine or the office manager. In either case, leave your name and telephone number,
and ask that a therapist call you back. When the therapist does call you back, you’ll talk a little bit about why you
want to come into therapy and set up a time for a first meeting. In the beginning, and for some time, sessions typically involve
whatever you need to talk about and finding a comfortable way to work with each other. A large part of the therapy process
involves your relationship to the therapist. When discussing personal thoughts and feelings you may experience a wide range
of ideas and emotions. You will work together with your therapist to understand yourself better and how to make effective
use of this new understanding.
